Sonu chair Babu Owino was yesterday charged in a Kibera court with assaulting his main opponent in the student union elections.

He denied the charges before principal magistrate Tito Gesora.

Owino was part of a group that allegedly attacked Mike Jacobs at the Shell petrol station in Kilelshwa on March 21.

Owino's

four lawyers, led by Makueni MP Daniel Maanzo and lawyer George Kithi, asked

Gesora to release him on reasonable bond terms.

Maanzo said Owino lodged a complaint that it is he who was attacked at Kileleshwa police station but no action was taken.

Kithi said the case was politically motivated. He said Jacobs is being given priority "yet he is the attacker".

Owino's

lawyers

asked the court to summon Kilimani police boss to explain why he has not acted on his complaint.

State counsel Kennedy Muema said due process was followed when drafting charges.

Gesora said that there is no need to summon the police boss since all their claims will be brought up during the hearing of the case.

He ordered Owino to deposit Sh200,000 bond and a surety of the same amount or pay a Sh100,000 cash bail.

The case will be heard on July 21. Owino defeated Jacobs in student union elections but Jacobs’ says Owino rigged the poll.

Violence broke out when results were announced.
