The Marakwet and Keiyo communities are negotiating how to share key positions, especially the Elgeyo Market governor and senator seats.

Three aspirants have started grassroots campaigns in an effort to unseat Governor Alex Tolgos.

Both Tolgos and Senator Kipchumba Murkomen have expressed interest in the top seat. They are both from the Marakwet community and some leaders want one slot given to the Keiyos.

“This time, we propose that the Keiyo community produces the governor while the Marakwets, remain with the Senator slot,” Kanu branch chair Paul Kibet said. Auditor Benard Chepkulei has started campaigns to establish networks. “I am working with the people and listening to their concerns as we plan for next year,”he said on Saturday.

He said his politics is issue-based. Keiyo South MP Jackson Kiptanui has also started lobbying for governor. He is a close ally of Senator Kipchumba Murkomen. Both Chepkulei and Kiptanui are allies of DP William Ruto and will seek the Jubilee ticket along with Tolgos.

Tolgos has focussed on agriculture and healthcare, but critics say the he has not achieved more than 40 per cent of what he planned. They say they want change.
