Nearly 2,000 people have been killed as a result of gun violence in the North Rift, Coast, and North Eastern in the last three years, KNCHR have said.

In the same period there have been around 574 ethnic clashes, 260 robberies, and 277 terror attacks.

The three regions have also lost 91 police officers, while another 180,000 people have been displaced due to the violence.

Kenya National Commission on Human Rights has launched a 30-day public hearing to look at the causes of the perennial violence witnessed in the regions.

“Over the past three years, in the response to increased insecurity in the country, we have deployed a team to investigate the causes of conflict in those regions,” KNCHR chair Kagwiria Mbogori said.

“This is a colossal loss of life and property and something needs to be done” she added.

Phase 1 of the probe will target the North Rift region and will run from the 9th of May to the 10th of June.

Baringo County hearings will take place in Marigat, between 9th to 13th May; Yatia, between 16th to 20th May; and finally in Kaptabwa and Chemilongot, between 23rd to 27th May.

The team will then head to Turkana counties, Kainuk and West Pokot, from June 6th – 10th

“The findings and results of the public hearing shall be shared with relevant public and private institutions for remedial action," Mbogori continued, noting that the commission has a mandate of protecting, observing and promoting human rights in Kenya.

Members of the public who wish to participate in the hearing will be allowed to do so publicly, or in camera through a private session.

Mbogoria said they will also provide witness protection for those who will feel their lives are in danger. The commission maintains perpetrators of the violence should be held accountable.
