Former FKF vice chairman Robert Asembo believes educating fans on the consequences of hooliganism is the only way to curb the vice.

Asembo said fans are usually unaware of their responsibilities during matches, therefore resort to violence when they feel irked by their teams, club or match officials.

“It is unfortunate that we are witnessing violence now and then in our stadia especially involving AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia," he told a meeting of AFC Leopards branch officials.

Asembo is one of the aspirants for the chairman seat in elections set for next month.

“The only way to curb hooliganism is to educate our fans through the various branches. It is commonly practised in the bigger leagues and it has worked,” he said.

Asembo, a former Leopards secretary general, was ejected from the stands at City Stadium alongside chairman Julius Ochiel, during AFC Leopards’ match against Posta Rangers.

“I believe club officials have done very little in ensuring fans act with decorum even when aggrieved. It is the club that always suffers when such occurrences happen,” he added.

Leopards are facing tough times after shirt and league sponsor Sportpesa suspended sponsorship indefinitely due to crowd trouble.

On April 23, AFC Leopards' match against Ulinzi Stars at Mumias Complex aborted in the 81st

minute due to violence after fans were irked by a refereeing decision.

A week earlier, Gor Mahia’s encounter with Tusker at Nyayo Stadium was also disrupted by violence.

The two clubs have been culprits of violent clashes between their fans during derby matches or against other teams especially due to the never-ending controversial officiating in the Kenyan top flight.

“I will bring sanity to the club once elected and I will work with you (branch officials) in ensuring we put an end to this vice,” added Asembo.
