Twenty AP officers were involved in a tragic road accident on Saturday night as they traveled to Kitengela from Kajiado town when their lorry collided head-on with another vehicle.

"Two officers suffered critical head injuries while eight others had minor injuries", County Administration Police Commander Philemon Mboya told the Star.

The accident occurred one kilometer before Isinya town at 8.55pm.

The injured were rushed to Kitengela Medical and Nairobi West hospitals in private vehicles after attempts to secure county government ambulances failed.

The police truck was involved in an accident with a Tanzania- bound lorry and rolled after the impact.

All the officers belong to the elite Rural Border Patrol Unit and they were destined to Kitengela on a special assignment to hunt down a gang that has caused the death of a police officer and a civilian in the last three weeks.

“This is a highly trained unit of officers to handle clashes and criminal activities along the country’s borders. Most of them came from Loitokitok border with Tanzania while others came from Namanga,” said Mboya.

Three days ago, County Commissioner Harsama Kello, directed the unit to take over security surveillance in Kitengela after several blood-chilling incidences rocked the town.

The RBPU officers have a tented camp near Kajiado town and travel to Kitengela every night for the security operation.

Mboya said the officers are separated from others and the public and have one focus to deal with suspected criminals and terrorists.

Inside sources within the police service told the Star most of the RBPU officers trained in Israel, Germany and the United States of America with a special focus on taming terrorism.

The officers were also following last week's incident where a seven-man gang raided a home at Hills View Estate and took away Sh300, 000 from a family and injured one person.

On April 16, a five-man gang robbed Sh4 million from a bank in the EPZA zone and escaped into Kitengela town.
