‘It is foolhardy to act as if there is no God, and worse, to try to validate that theory by registering an association’ – Ndichu

A religious organisation wants the Atheists’ Society of Kenya deregistered immediately, saying the Attorney General should resign for permitting it.

Kenya National Congress of Pentecostal Churches and Ministries said it is “abominable and unconstitutional” for the society to be registered.

The Atheists’ Society will have a party today at Gravity Lounge on Kimathi Street to celebrate its registration. Entry is free and the theme is ‘Without God’.

During a press conference yesterday, congress vice chair Stephen Ndichu said: “As people who believe in God, we register our disgust to the AG for the way he has casually and in utter contempt been handling religious issues.”

“He has now touched the nerve of every person of faith by registering a society that denies the existence of God.”

Separately, Muslims’ Shuura Council chair Abdullahi Abdi also criticised the registration, saying it violates the constitution and mocks Kenya’s cultural and social norms.

“We are a people of faith. We are now opening up to ideas that promote immorality through erosion of our values anchored on religion,” he said.

The Atheist Society has 5,000 members. The organisation launched countrywide recruitment and advocates scrapping religious studies from the syllabus.

Ndichu said: “Our forefathers were ardent believers in God and inscribed tenets in our national instruments, including the national anthem, which opens with a prayer ‘Oh God of all creation’. Our constitution in the preamble acknowledges that we are a people who believe in God.”

He said it is contemptuous to register an organisation that defies the constitution.

Ndichu said it is foolhardy to act as if there is no God and worse still, to try to authenticate the idea by registering an organisation and getting a certificate. Ndichu said this exposes the country to God’s wrath
