Murang’a Governor Mwangi Wairia, Senator Kembi Gitura and Kigumo MP Jamleck Kamau on Wednesday put aside their differences to rescue families displaced by a landslide. The landslide took place on Tuesday evening in Gakira village, Kigumo constituency.

The three have been embroiled in endless fights on the running of the county government, with Wairia blaming Kembi and Kamau for his woes. Wairia has been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission detectives twice. Wairia publicly blamed Kamau, who wants to run for governor, for the arrests.

He said the MP was trying to humiliate him since he cannot compete with his development record. Kembi has on several occasions accused the governor of corruption, misappropriating public funds and insulting other leaders.

Missing 80-year-old

On Wednesday, however, the three joined hundreds of Kigumo residents in searching for an 80-year-old woman who vanished on Tuesday evening and is believed to have been swept away by the landslide.

The three later held a meeting at Mariira Agricultural Training Institute, where they agreed that a committee headed by area deputy county commissioner Moses Mbaruku will lead efforts to assist the affected families. The committee will comprise representatives from the offices of the three leaders and the county disaster management committee.

In a show of unity that surprised many, the leaders also agreed that the families will be hosted at the training institute until they are relocated. “The county government will provide three bulldozers to help clear the debris at the landslide site,” Wairia said. Mbaruku said seven other families may be required to relocate as their houses have cracks on the walls.
