The coastal region is forming a political movement to unite all six counties ahead of the 2017 general election.

The idea, which has been a subject of discussion for a month in a social media network, is aimed at bringing back ‘Upwani’ and uniting Coast residents.

Those represented in the WhatsApp group ‘Umoja Summit’ are high profile personalities from the six Coast counties.

They include politicians, diplomats, scholars, legislators and professionals.

Among the top personalities in the group are Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi, CPG chairman Gunga Mwinga, Mining CS Dan Kazungu, MPs Thomas Mwadeghu (Wundanyi) and Harrison Kombe (Magarini) and politician Naomi Cidi.

The Umoja Summit’s objectives are to define the political direction of the region.

Already plans are in top gear to have the first Umoja Summit leaders’ general assembly tomorrow at Pwani University.

Members will come up with an agenda of the region’s politics.

Group administrators said members should forget about party affiliations or supremacy battles and focus on unity.

Cidi, a scholar who has served and is still serving in senior positions in government, said in a post that the idea is for Coast residents to unite and increase their influence on the national platform.

“The core business is how to organise, mobilise and galvanise our people, leaders, technocrats, professionals, academics, beyond the shadows of coalitions or national party affiliations,” she said.

Cidi said the issues to be discussed include whether Coast will still go with the national coalitions in 2017, form a Coast-based national party or a coalition of regional parties.
