Officers recruiting prison warders in Lamu on Wednesday had to lower the pass mark from a D+ in the KCSE to D because most applicants were unqualified.
The exercise sought 15 recruits in Lamu West and Lamu East subcounties – six in Lamu East and nine in Lamu West. An officer told the Star said most applicants were primary school dropouts.
“The exercise was well conducted, but there was low turnout. We targeted individuals with at least a D+ in KCSE, but we were shocked to realise most of those who turned up had a D plain and below. That is why we lowered the grade to get the targeted number,” the officer said.
He urged residents to pursue secondary education.
