Butali Sugar Warriors retained their Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Premier League title after beating hosts Western Jaguars 3-0 at Kakamega High School yesterday.

Frank Wanangwe (13th minute), Saidi Okwemba (28th) and Seth Oburu (69th) scored for Butali to win their second successive league title with a game in hand.

Butali have amassed 74 points from 27 outings while their main challengers Kenya Police have 67 points with two matches in hand. If Police win their remaining two matches, they can only finish on 73 points, a point behind Butali in case the leaders lose their remaining match against Kenyatta University next weekend. After a goal-less draw in the opening stages of the match, Wanangwe opened the account for Butali in the 13th minute with a field goal and Okwemba doubled the scores with a penalty corner conversion for a 2-0 half-time lead. The second half saw Butali continue with their attacking game but most of their chances went to waste.

With seconds to the buzzer, Oburu struck in open field play, scoring from a goal-mouth melee. In another match played at City Park Stadium, Samuel Wokila scored thrice including a last minute winner as Kenya Police beat Kenya College of Accountancy University 4-3 at City Park on Saturday. Police surrendered a 2-0 half time lead to trail 3-2 before Wokila added two more goals in 11 minutes to ensure they stay trail leaders Butali Sugar Warriors. Wokila’s double in the second half canceled Arnold Marago’s second half hat-trick in 13 minutes.

Wokila put Police ahead in the fifth minute before Oliver Echenje doubled the lead.
