The Wajir Water department has started repairing a borehole that broke down at Sarif village, Wajir South subcounty.

Last month, five people died in a cholera outbreak in Sarif village, bringing the number of victims in Wajir county to 45, health officials said.

Chief Officer Abdinoor Hussein on Wednesday said his department has identified a site for drilling another borehole. This comes in the wake of a cholera outbreak in the town last week.

County Health chief Abdullahi Mohamed, who spoke to the pres in Wajir town yesterday, said the county government deployed Public Health staff to work with subcounty health teams to contain the disease.

“As it stands, the progress of the patients is steady and they are responding well to treatment,” said Mohamed, who inspected a cholera treatment centre opened in the town last week. He was with Wajir South subcounty administrator Mohamed Noor, county epidemiologist Hassan Adam and representatives from Red Cross, Unicef and World Vision. The team also conducted a public education and awareness drive. They engaged the residents in a question-and-answer session.
