Six Ethiopians were arrested in Mombasa on Friday, while on their way to Tanzania, for being in Kenya illegally.

They are Mekengo Bekele, Madebo Ashore, Girma Lengu, Taketer Abaya, Ashore Detebo and Dalalo Manido.

The six were arrested by Ferry police station officers following a tip-off from members of the public.

Likoni OCPD Willy Simba said they were informed that the foreigners were being transported in a vehicle of registration number KCA 783Y.

He said the Ethiopians did not have documents from the immigration department.

"The car was being driven by a Kenyan identified as Robert Msando. We suspect they were being smuggled to Tanzania through Lunga Lunga border," he said.

Simba said the man will be charged with human trafficking and the Ethiopians with being in the country illegally.

He said security will be intensified in the area and crackdowns carried out to keep illegal immigrants out.

The porous border has been used to smuggle foreigners, Ethiopians and Somalis in particular, to South Africa.

Kenyan officials complained on Wednesday that 74 Ethiopians who had competed their jail terms were dumped at the border.

The foreigners were to be deported.
