Mike Jacobs among 33 UoN students expelled over Sonu election chaos

The UoN senate has expelled 33 students, including Babu Owino's rival Mike Jacobs, over violent protests against disputed Sonu elections.

The senate further suspended 25 students for a period of 2-3 years, issued warnings to 143 and pardoned 17.

Vice Chancellor Peter Mbithi said the independent election petitions panel received 17 petitions arising from the 2016 student union elections.

"The panel has heard and

finalised

four petitions, is writing

rulings

on 12 while one has not started," he said.

Mbithi told a press conference on Friday that a complete report will be tabled at a senate meeting next week.

Regarding the status of the university's halls of residence, he said lights have been installed, and the building repaired and cleaned.

More than 200 students of the University of Nairobi were

suspended for allegedly participating in the protests despite warnings by Mbithi and police.

took to the streets following Owino's victory in the race for Sonu chairman.

Owino, whose real name is Paul Ongili, has been at the helm of Sonu since 2014 when he was re-elected for the second time, making his current term the fourth.

He allegedly defeated Jacobs by engaging in malpractices.

Jacobs said the disciplinary action taken was

as their mistakes were not specified.

The students burned Sonu offices and set a hostel on fire following an order for the university's

over the unrest.

College of Health Sciences – Level 5 Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery - will on Monday.

The rest of the students who were in session before the closure on April 5 will re-open on May 3.
