Kenya has made history at the HSBC Singapore Sevens World Series by winning the first ever world rugby title in seventeen years by thrashing defending champions Fiji by 30-7 in the Main Cup finals. Kenya started the game on a high note by placing two quick unconverted tries in the first few minutes of the game.
Oscar Ayodi opened the scoring by firing the first try before Collins Injera added another quick try to make it 10 nil. Minutes later, Injera added another unconverted try to make it 15-0 as the Shujaas continued their dominance over the defending champions.
Sammy Oliech made it 20-0 a few minutes later and Shujaa held on to the score till half.
Fiji started on a high note by opening the scoring in the second half through a converted try to reduce the margin to 20-7 but Kenya responded by scoring another try via Nelson Oyoo to make it 25-7.
Frank Wanyama wrapped up Fiji’s thrashing by placing the winning try whose conversion went unsuccessful like the previous attempts.
It took Kenya 114 tournaments to finally achieve the milestone of winning a HSBC World Rugby 7s tournament.
President Uhuru Kenyatta congratulated the team for the remarkable win.
In his congratulatory message President Kenyatta said, “You have made us proud, our star continues to shine as a powerhouse in sports.”
“A brilliant, confident and powerful effort has earned Team Kenya a richly deserved victory,” the President stated.
