A video clip showing al Shabaab training websites saved on a computer belonging to a defendant in the Westgate mall terror trial will be used as evidence.

The clip was found on Mohamed Abdi’s computer. Forensic computer investigator Joseph Korum, attached to the Anti-Terror Police Unit, found the clip.

It was revealed that Abdi had visited seven al Shabaab websites, among them sites with training series on using AK 47 rifles. The clip was presented as part of the prosecution’s evidence to prove its case against Abdi and three others but the court chose to have it viewed in private.

Trial magistrate Daniel Ogembo yesterday ruled that the video clip be played following application by lawyers representing the suspects. Korum, in his evidence, told the court that on October 5 last year, he received a laptop from constable Ndung’u Mburu from the ATPU requesting for a forensic investigation.

He told the court he was supposed to ascertain if the laptop contained evidence in relation to the Westgate attack.

The officer informed the court the seven sites he found in the computer are al Shabaab sites dedicated to production of jihad material and terror propaganda.

Korum was testifying in the trial of four suspects – Abdi, Liban Omar, Adan Dheq and Hussein Mustafah – charged with assisting terrorists who attacked the mall on September 21, 2013. Sixty-seven people were killed and scores injured.

The court will watch the clips showing the al Shabaab training on how to use AK 47 rifles
