Four Nairobi county askaris accused of murdering a hawker have been released on bond but asked to ensure peace and order within the CBD.

Alfred Ogesi, Ambani Akasi, Julius Ochieng' and Protus Sakala, who denied the charges, appeared

before High Court judge James Wakiaga on Wednesday.

Wakiaga granted each of them Sh2 million bond with an alternative Sh500,000 cash bail. He said DPP Keriako Tobiko did not give enough reasons for wanting them denied bail.

The judge directed the city inspectorate department to redeploy the suspects.

The suspects were accused of murdering hawker Irungu Kamau on September 16, 2013. The case will be mentioned on April 12.

Senator Mike Sonko, who had offered a Sh100,000 reward for information on suspects behind hawker killings, said Sakala was the leader of the gang.

Sonko had also threatened to resign had authorities failed to take action against rogue city askaris.

An activist sued the Senator, accusing him of to harass askaris in police custody.

Joseph Gitonga further accused Sonko of using state machinery to have the askaris arrested without proof, and his connections to have them persecuted.

Sonko did not reply phone messages on the claims.
