Former Limuru MP Peter Mwathi has supported a new curriculum to replace the current 8-4-4 system, saying it is will improve education quality.

He said the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development decided to propose the new system to compete with those of developed countries.

“We have seen students fail in their final exams. I feel the tiers in the new curriculum will prepare our students to tackle different exams and there will be very few students failing, unlike today,” Mwathi said.

He was speaking on Thursday at PCEA Kamandura Girl’s High School whose two dormitories were burnt.

He donated 147 blankets and 150 mattresses worth Sh350,000.

Principal Faith Muchiri said five students were charged with arson and the school suspended others because of indiscipline.

In the proposed curriculum, the first tier will include early year education for five years.

Pre-primary will take two years while lower primary three years.

The second tier will be middle school and will take six years.

Tier three will be high school and tertiary education.

Mwathi said the new curriclum will be important for the country’s development.
