One person was killed and several others left with arrow and machete wounds during clashes over land in Kosovo area in Naivasha.
More than 10 houses were torched in the Friday
incident involving members of the Maasai and Kalenjin communities.
Pastoralists blocked police from collecting the mutilated body of the herder,
demanding the return of their 600 sheep and goats.
Another herder was killed last month after the two communities clashed over
the ownership of the vast Agriculture Development Corporation (ADC) farm.
The ADC obtained a court order stopping the man's burial on the land at
the border of Nakuru and Narok counties.
Witness James Roka said today's conflict concerned
the ownership of the land and the unresolved murder case.
He said trouble has
been brewing for two weeks as
no arrests have been made, adding residents continued farming on the land.
Naivasha subcounty commissioner Isaac Masinde confirmed the death and said police officers were dispatched to the area.
Masinde attributed the clash to the dispute over the ownership of the ADC farm, noting there
was a case pending in court.
“We called elders from the warring communities so that we can resolve this,” he said.
