After leading Kenya to a successful outing at the World Half Marathon Championships in Cardiff last weekend on her first coaching duty, two-time world marathon champion Catherine Ndereba is looking forward to returning to the fold at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Ndereba, who won numerous accolades as a runner including world titles in Paris (2003), Osaka (2007) and silver in Helsinki (2005) as well as Olympic Games silver medals in Athens (2004) and Beijing (2008), said it was fulfilling to share her experiences with the youthful runners.
Geoffrey Kamworor and fellow Kenyan Bedan Karoki Muchiri made a 1-2 victory while Peres Jechirchir kicked away from pre-race favourite Cynthia Limo near the finish to take the title with Mary Wacera Ngugi taking bronze.
“It means a lot to me being my first time as a coach and to lead them to a great win. I feel that I have a team following in my steps,” said Ndereba, who finished third at the 1999 world half marathon championships. “It was great to be given an opportunity to share my experiences with the younger generation.”
