Two herders shot dead in Pokot-Marakwet clash over pasture

Two people were shot dead and scores injured by suspected Pokot herders in Endo, Marakwet East, during a dispute over pasture.

The

two herders were attacked in their manyatta at around 11.30pm on Wednesday, said area

deputy county commissioner Eric Mulevu.

Mulevu said Pokot herders from Tiaty, Baringo county, crossed over to Marakwet East in search of pasture following a drought that began in January.

“The suspects are known cattle rustlers. We are engaging elders and chiefs to help us identify them for arrest and prosecution,” he said.

He said the attackers may have been the ones who shot another herder five days ago.

Mulevu said police officers were deployed to the area to restore calm and ensure there are no more shootings.
