The Kenya Witness Protection Agency has now taken over the case in which a Mandera county Identity Card Vetting Committee member says she fears for her life.

This is after committee member Awliya Ali's three colleagues were killed in mysterious circumstances.

Mandera Township senior chief Jamal Haji, assistant chief Mohamed Ibrahim and Mohammed Maalim who served as members of ID vetting committee were killed by unknown people.

They were killed at their homes in similar style, weeks apart.

The motive of their killing is not known, but she links the killings to a case in which she and the vetting committee members are witnesses. In the case Leila Hassan and three others are accused of obtaining IDs irregularly.

Awliya's plight was exclusively highlighted by the Star on Tuesday.

Her son Abdirazaq Mohamed, 26, has also been missing for months.

He was reportedly arrested by people said to be members of the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit.

Agency principal public relations officer Calvine Oredi said they will ensure the safety of Awliya.

He declined, however, to disclose the specific measures the agency will taken, citing security reasons.

"We will conduct risk assessment and level of threat and who is probably after her life," Oredi said.

He said the process is being done in collaboration with the Kenya National Human Rights Commission.

Yesterday, Awliya told the Star she welcomes any help offered to her.

"I ask for help. My son is still missing. I don't when they will come for me," she said on the phone from Mandera.

Awliya said her son was taken away when she was in Nairobi to testify in the case at the Milimani law courts.

She said her other children have also fled home and abandoned school for fear of being abducted and killed.
