Kenya Sevens women’s team will face South Africa, China and Kazakhstan in the Hong Kong Invitational Sevens tournament slated for next month.

Kenya team is using the tour as a build-up for the Rio Olympic Games in August. Coach Mike Shamiah said the tournament in Hong Kong is ideal preparation for the big event in Brazil.

The team resumed training three weeks ago and Shamiah said the girls are in good shape with most of them playing for their clubs in the ongoing women’s league. “The girls are in good condition physically what we need to work on various tactical aspects of the game and address the weaknesses in the team,” added Shamiah.

Kenya played at the Dubai Invitational tournament in December last year, losing all three group matches to Great Britain (31-7), Tokyo Phoneix (29-24) and Colombia (15-5). Shamiah called on the union to provide more build-up tournaments if Kenya is to compete at the Olympic Games. “We need more more build-up tournaments and this is something we have asked the union to look into,” added Shamiah.
