Nkaissery names firearms licensing board after Joho gun drama

The Interior CS has set up a firearms licensing board days after a court ordered for such a body to handle the Mombasa Governor's case.

Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery, in a gazette notice on Tuesday, named Enoch Sasia as head of the nine-member secretariat.

The team is tasked with certifying applicants' suitability to have guns and periodically assessing their proficiency.

It can issue, cancel, terminate or vary any licence or permit issued under the Firearms Act.

Members include

Lilian Kiamba, Stanley Omucheyi, Barnice Gachegu and Anthony Wahome. Others are William Sing’oei, George Waiguru, James Ngului and Samuel Kimaru.

Nkaissery stated in the notice that the members' terms, which began on Wednesday, will end after three years.

The CS had ordered Governor Hassan Joho to surrender all his firearms and threatened to have him if he did not comply.

The firearm law states that if a person's firearm is revoked, he has 14 days to comply with the date the decision is made or be arrested.

Joho against the decision in a letter to Nkaissery and moved to Milimani law courts to stop his arrest.

High Court judge George Odunga said in a ruling that Nkaissery's action was "an ".

Odunga suspended Nkaissery's order pending the determination of Joho's application.

Cord leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka had threatened to Joho would have been taken to had he been arrested.
