THE family of a woman who died shortly after she was released from Mariguini AP camp in South B yesterday said officers demanded Sh5,000 to release her.

Mercy Nanjala died at Mbagathi Hospital after she left the camp unconscious.

She had been taken into custody after allegedly bing found with her friend’s missing phone last Tuesday.

The friend, Emily Wasike, told police she didn’t want to pursue the matter in court since she had recovered her phone.

Nanjala’s sister, Philis Nangila, told the Star at City Mortuary one of the two officers on night guard at the camp sent for her.

“I went at around 8pm and he told me to give Sh5,000 if I wanted my sister released and insisted she was a thief,” Nangila said.

“I left her there because I didn’t have the money”.

But Makadara AP deputy commander John Macharia said the officers detained Nanjala to produce her friend’s SIM and memory cards missing from the phone.

He said the officers called the family the following day at 5am “when her health deteriorated”.

Nanjala’s mother Evelyn Nafula said her daughter was not unwell.

Nanjala’s phone was on Sunday still at the camp.

Nafula said her daughter was assaulted at the police station.
