Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong's wife Judy Ojaamong has stirred a storm on social media after she gave condoms to commercial sex workers.

Residents made comments on the Facebook page Bunge la Busia County.

Chris Amba wrote: "I find your reasoning lacks consistency. The fact that prostitution is prevalent doesn't give it a clean bill of health."

A majority of people commenting said giving the sex workers condoms will promote prostitution.

"Let our sisters and brothers in this trade do soul searching and convince their conscience if this is the only trade they can do. Instead of giving them condoms, find an alternative or a trade that will help them make a living," comment read.

The workers, though their umbrella organisation Survivors Self Help Group, had asked for help in accessing condoms and lubricants.

"We have our cousins, who include women sex workers, MSM (men having sex with men) and transgender men and women, but they lack condoms and lubricants," group director Caroline Kemunto said.

She spoke in Busia town on Thursday.

"Our membership currently stands at 2,500 with members spread to various urban centres, including Nambale, Bumala, Funyula, Matayos, Busia town and Port Victoria," Kemunto said.

Handing over a carton of condoms to the group on Thursday, Judy said the donation will help the workers.

She said she will ask the National Aids and STIs Control Programme for more condoms and lubricants to meet the group's demand.

Judy said Busia is a border town with a high spread of HIV and Aids and sexually transmitted diseases.

It is paramount to take precautions and avoid unprotected sex, she said.

Judy said she was happy the organisation openly talked about sexual workers in the county.

She promised to bring more condoms through the National Aids Control Council and other organisations to help sex workers protect themselves and their clients from infections.

Judy urged sex workers not to shy away from talking about their status because their work earns them income.

She also urged the sex workers to educate other people on the importance of protecting themselves.

Kemunto said the condoms will be distributed in bars and other places that attract sex workers in Nambale, Matayos, Bumala, and Budalang'i.

She thanked Judy for here quick response to their request, saying it shows the governor's wife cares about their welfare.
