Twenty people were arrested on Thursday evening after clashes over the disputed Ngongongeri farm at Njoro-Molo border in Nakuru county.

They were apprehended for allegedly inciting farm residents into the previous night, amid clashes between two communities.

A lawyer representing the group confirmed this but Rift Valley regional coordinator Wanyama Musiambo and county commander Hassan Barua said they were not aware of the arrests.

Lawyer Gordon Ogola said the people were arrested in Ngongongeri and will appear in court on Friday.

Ngongongeri farm is home to more than 300 families of the Ogiek community and other tribes.

Former powerful officers and cabinet ministers in the Kanu regime, a sitting MP and a governor own pieces of property, some more than 40,000 acres,

on the farm.

Tension remained high in the area as the communities fought over the ownership of the land and more than 50 police officers conducted patrols.

Musiambo, who led security and intelligence officers on a tour of the area on Thursday, said the patrols will continue until order is restored.

He said the officers were under strict instructions to arrest anyone found inciting residents, torching property or carrying illegal weapons.

“One community set upon the other after a peace and security meeting was held by administrators from both subcounties," he explained.

"Armed youth torched the houses between 7pm and 8pm before police moved in."

Musiambo said he was aware some government officers were among those inciting members of the public. He said those culpable will be punished despite their social and political status.

The police boss cited the suspension of a chief who allegedly incited one community against another. He said the chief will be arraigned in court alongside the other suspects.

Musiambo asked anyone with a dispute to have the matter addressed through courts instead of destroying property. He said some of the suspects being pursued have switched off their phones.

Residents claimed one person was struck by an arrow and injured but Musiambo said police had not received a report on this.

The National Land Commission visited the property land and promised to provide a solution in a 21-day period that will expire next Friday.
