A court has sentenced to death the main suspect behind the 2012 Bella Vista club grenade attack that left a guard dead.

Thabit Yahya was charged with murder before judge Martin Muya at Mombasa law courts on Thursday.

Muya said there was sufficient evidence against the accused. He said Yahya was among terror suspects who threw four grenades into the club.

Yahya was arrested on May 19 that year after officers from the Anti-Terror Police Unit noticed his injuries.

He was found with a bus ticket hours after the blast four days earlier, and luggage including a magazine loaded with eight bullets.

Police commissioner Mathew Iteere said he was monitored for a while after his arrest over links to other attacks.

In the attack, sources said, one gunman opened fire when guards at the popular club denied Yahya and two accomplices entry.

The sources said the attackers then hurled grenades into the club and fled.
