Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong yesterday pledged to allocate more funds for women.

He urged the national government and NGOs to follow suit.

Ojaamong said his government may increase the current ceiling of 30 per cent to even 50 if the flow of funds from the National Treasury will be timely.

He spoke during the International Women's Day at the Agricultural Training Centre in Busia town.

Ojaamong urged women to come up with budget proposals to enable his government give the necessary funding.

He said his government has many programmes that can benefit women, youth and vulnerable groups

Ojaamong also told women MCAs to drive women agenda in the assembly.

The governor's wife, Judy, called for unity among women and cautioned them against "washing their dirty linen in public".

He welcomed the idea of MCA Happy Gloria for her to host the county women secretariat, saying she is ready to support it.

Busia woman representative Florence Mutua said the little funds they have managed to get has helped many.

"We have managed to return 70 girls back to school after they dropped out owing to one reason or the other. My bursary is unique in that the recipients be paid for fees until they finish form four education," she said.

A total of 21 women were recognised for their services to residents in education, nursing, security and community policing.
