We’re not fighting Jubilee, says Gideon

Kanu is not in the opposition but it is a Jubilee coalition partner, Baringo Senator and party national chairman Gideon Moi has said.

Gideon said on Sunday the former ruling party signed a memorandum of understanding when the government came to power after the March 4, 2013, general election.

“Fielding Paul Sang on the Kanu ticket against JAP candidate Aaron Cheruiyot in the [March 7] by-election does not mean we are in the opposition, trying to fight the government of the day or sneaking tribal or divisive politics,” he said.

Gideon spoke at Lesirwo Secondary School sports ground, Kipkelion West constituency, in Kericho county during campaigns for Sang.

Jubilee is uneasy following the defeat of its candidate Richard Leitich in the Nyangores by-election to Andrew Maritim of Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto’s Mashinani Party.

Kanu campaigned for Maritim.

Gideon termed “ridiculous and uncalled” the claim by Deputy President William Ruto that Kanu is engaging in opposition politics and dividing the Kalenjin community.

He said Sang is experienced, served for a decade as Buret MP and as Health minister.

“We just want to be given a free hand to elect a senator of the people’s choosing and forced to elect a senator who will end up being a rubber stamp for the government,” he said.

Present were Rutto, Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter, Sang and Kanu secretary general Nick Salat.
