A 10-year-old was hit and killed by a speeding matatu on Moi South Lake road in Naivasha, sparking violent protests on Monday evening.

A witness said residents of Kamere estate, home to flower farm workers, beat up the driver and torched the Naivasha-bound matatu to avenge the death of the Mvuke Primary School pupil.

"The boy, who was with his mother, rushed to cross the road after spotting a relative when the matatu ran over him," Samson Wambugu said.

He added: "Nearly all the flower farms and the nearby Kengen plants have been affected by this demonstration as workers are caught up in the jam."

Wambugu said the mob further

looted or burned passengers' luggage.

Matatu operators in turn blocked the road on Tuesday morning

paralysing transport as they engaged police in running battles.

The skirmishes caused a three-hour jam with anti-riot police moving in to clear the road but the operators threatened more protests.

Wambugu said the operators demanded the arrest of the "known" people who burned the vehicle before they could resume operations.

Police said the body was taken to a local mortuary and investigations into the incident launched.
