Former electoral commission CEO James Oswago yesterday denied receiving kickbacks to influence tender awards to a UK company supplying poll materials.

Oswago said the ChickenGate scandal was a creation of the media and he will sue businessman Trevor Oyombra for linking him to it.

He spoke after he was grilled by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission at the agency’s offices.

The investigations are targeting former commissioners and staff of the defunct Interim Independent Electoral Commission.

The probe focusses on tender committee members who travelled to Britain to meet Smith and Ouzman officials, where part of the bribe is said to have been paid.

Officials of Smith and Ouzman have been prosecuted and jailed in the UK.

Oswago said the UK cases were different from Kenya’s because the convicts were found guilty of six offences.

In Kenya, the suspects are being investigated for three offences, he said.

Attorney General Githu Muigai received a report from the British government containing names of commissioners and tender committee members.

They allegedly received money from the UK company to help it win a tender to print ballot papers.
