Pwani University in Kilifi town has been closed indefinitely for unknown reasons.

The university was closed on Thursday through an internal memo, but the administration did not give reasons for the closure.

On Thursday morning, the administration had barred students from holding a meeting to protest against a call to all with fee arrears to defer their studies until January next year.

“This is to inform all the staff and students that the university has been closed until further notice. All students are therefore requested to vacate the university premises by 3pm today [Thursday],” the memo from vice chancellor Prof Mohammed Rajab read.

When contacted, Rajab declined to speak about the matter and said he was going into a meeting.

Pwani University Students Association president Wilson Shoka said the college was closed after the administration learnt of impending chaos following the order for students with fee balances to defer their studies.

“Some students who had arrears had refused to leave the school, even after the order. We were planning to hold a meeting in the morning, but due to the tension the school stopped us,” he said.
