Bishop Gideon Mwiti, the Imenti Central MP, has denied issuing an apology to Meru senator Kiraitu Murungi for dismissing his gubernatorial ambition in a drunken rant.
Mwiti made the remarks when contacted by The Star after Kiraitu said he had forgiven the MP for the insults captured in a video that had gone viral on social media.
In the video in question, Mwiti described Kiraitu’s gubernatorial ambition as selfish.
He added that the planned partnership between the senator and Igembe south MP Mithika Linturi to vie for the governor and senate seats respectively in 2017, was “fatal” to Meru.
“I have met him (Kiraitu) but I have not apologized. I am a bishop and I can forgive anyone, if he wants forgiveness I am ready but I will continue telling Meru people the truth”, said Mwiti.
He added; “He should not forgive me, what I have said is the truth. I still say Meru can’t belong to one person, Meru is bigger than Kiraitu, I have not insulted him and all I said is that he sold the bus (APK party).
Mwiti said in the four-minute video that the union between Kiraitu and Linturi was not meant to benefit the people of Meru, but the two leaders themselves.
“What I am telling Meru people is that there is no way Linturi and Kiraitu can unite to assist Meru people, Meru people, money will be stolen from you,” Mwiti said referring to prior attempts to unite the two.
“You can’t give these two the leadership of Meru with Linturi being the senator and Kiraitu as governor, Meru will be finished, they will sell Meru like the way you sell potatoes in the market.”
Kiraitu in a function in Meru on Saturday said he had forgiven Mwiti for the remarks.
The senator after attending the YETU Sacco annual General Meeting said he has forgiven the MP because he does not understand what spirit had engulfed him.
“Mwiti is my friend for a long time, we have been with him in the bus and I must say I was surprised to see what was circulating on social media,” Kiraitu said.
“I have met him, we have talked and I have forgiven him because he did not know what he was doing”, he added.
In the wake of the fall-out between Mwiti and Kiraitu, the MP has reaffirmed his support for Meru Governor Peter Munya in a change of stance from an earlier declaration that he and the governor have .
Mwiti accused Munya of blocking his number despite his efforts to campaign for the governor in the 2013 general election.
The MP added that he had a grudge against the Meru Governor.
Mwiti also said he regretted supporting Munya's candidature under the Alliance Party of Kenya.
Mwiti has since said he will now back Munya to recapture the seat in the 2017 polls.
