PRESIDENT Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday urged the police force to uphold integrity in their work and to fight corruption.

Presiding over a pass-out parade at the Kenya Police Training College in Kiganjo, he urged leaders of the force to aggressively enforce reforms.

“Failure of integrity in the police force has robbed it of public support,” Uhuru said.

Present were Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet.

Some 3,933 police recruits (2,304 men and 1,629 women) graduated.

The recruits have undergone 11 months of rigorous basic training to tackle crime, including terrorism.

Uhuru said the officers must demonstrate patriotism, devotion and commitment while discharging their duties.

“We want to recruit more police officers to ensure the country reaches the UN requirement of one police officer per 450 persons,” he said.

The President said the state is countering problems in the force.

He cited mobility, surveillance systems, resources and capacity.

Boinnet said corruption among police has tainted the force.

He said it is high time the force’s name was cleaned.

The IG said the recruits are well-trained to execute the mandate of the police force and protect the lives and properties of Kenyans.
