About 10,000 people are expected at the homecoming ceremony of Devolution CS Mwangi Kiunjuri at Nanyuki Stadium today.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to attend.

Tens of bulls and at least 300 goats will be slaughtered.

The chairman of the coordination committee, John Mwaniki, said: “We are ready to host more than 10,000 guests and feed them. We are expecting leaders from Central region, as well as people from Laikipia, Nyandarua, Meru, Nyeri and other counties.”

Mwaniki, who is the Laikipia county secretary, said roads leading to the venue have been murramed, while security agents are working round the clock to ensure the safety of attendants.

He said the event will be a prayer meeting to celebrate Kiunjuri’s appointment to the Cabinet.

It is the first time in about 30 years that a leader from Laikipia has been appointed to such a high-ranking office.

“We feel happy and we have organised the event to say thank you to God and also President Uhuru Kenyatta and his government for appointing one of our own to such a high position,” Mwaniki said.

The event will be the President’s first public tour of the county since he was elected.

Since early this week, county government graders have been maintaining the venue and roads leading to the stadium.

Yesterday, workers were erecting tents at the stadium and the neighbouring Loise Girls’ High School.

“Nanyuki is a hive of activity as we speak. We feel privileged that we will host the President,” Mwaniki said.
