Laikipia MCAs have been urged to work extra hard, as the general election approaches.

“The year 2016 is certainly bound to be remarkable. This is a year of consolidating gains we have achieved as a county and as an assembly,” speaker Patrick Mariru said.

He spoke on Tuesday when the House reopened after the holidays.

Many oversight reports from committees were tabled and concluded, the speaker said.

Mariru said there were tens of deliberative sessions with county executives and senior staff on issues affecting residents.

He said though the House has passed many laws, extra effort is needed.

“It must be borne in mind, however, that the challenge still remains. This assembly has its constitutional responsibilities and obligations clear cut,” Mariru said.

“This assembly has been a pacesetter on many issues.”

The speaker urged the ward representatives to carry out their constitutional duty.

This must translate into water for the residents, health, good roads, jobs and service delivery, Mariru said.

He lamented the return of illicit brews, saying it is unforgivable that many young people’s lives are ruined by the menace.

“We are staring at a generation being destroyed by selfish business. The President has called this ‘the business of death’. We must find a solution to this crisis,” Mariru told the assembly.
