A teenager was shot dead during a robbery at a butchery in Kayole estate, Naivasha, on Thursday night.

Witness Joshua Muya said a robber in a gang of five whipped out a pistol and ordered the 19 year-old butchery owner to surrender all his cash.

Muya said the man was shot dead when he defied the order and tried to repel his attackers using a knife. He said the teenager died at the scene while the five walked away.

Muya reported that the attackers had earlier raided several shops, the first at around 8pm, where they stole Sh4,000 in cash.

"They ordered the owner to hand in the day's collections while at gunpoint, which he did, before moving to the nearby butchery," he said.

Residents threatened to block Nairobi-Nakuru Highway in protest against the rising number of crimes in the state.

A police officer who declined to be named said investigations were underway.

The body was taken to Naivasha Subcounty Referral Hospital mortuary.
