Fifty Baringo farmers have protested the delay in payment for goats bought by “prominent personalities” in December.

The farmers are drawn from Mogotio, Eldama Ravine and Baringo Central subcounties.

Speaking to the press in Kabarnet town yesterday, they said the politicians bought the goats at the Kimalel goat auction on credit.

Sources allege Deputy President Ruto, who presided over the two-day auction, is yet to pay for the 300 goats he bought worth Sh3.6 million.

Baringo North MP William Cheptumo and woman representative Grace Kiptui allegedly owe the farmers Sh500,000 each.

Eldama Ravine MP Musa Sirma who bought cows worth Sh500,000 allegedly has a balance of Sh208,000 while Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen reportedly has a Sh116,000 balance to clear out of Sh1.2million.

It is alleged that Kiprop Chirchir who represented Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero is yet to clear a Sh150,000 balance after buying goats worth Sh1.2million.

Those who have paid up in full are Baringo Senator Gideon Moi (Sh100,000), East Pokot MP Asman Kamama (Sh500,000), Mogotio MP Helen Sambili (Sh500,000), and Kenya Power director Susan Chesina (Sh120,000).

Farmer Johan Kiptoo from Mogotio subcounty said he sold 15 goats.

“I was depending on that money to pay school fees for my two children,” he said.
