Machakos plans to start live streaming of county assembly proceedings.

Speaker Bernard Mung’ata said the live feed is currently accessible from his office and the clerk.

He spoke during the assembly after the Christmas recess opening on Tuesday.

Mung’ata said the broadcasting will enable residents follow committee meetings and assembly events.

He said plans are underway to have the live feed extended to the assembly’s lodge, the visitors bay and, in the near future, to the Machakos bus park.

“Soon the assembly’s proceedings will not only be viewed from the clerk’s and the speaker’s office, but also other parts of the county like the bus park,” he said.

He said the main aim is to improve public understanding and boost confidence in democratic governance.

Mung’ata said the move will educate the public on the procedures.

“We want to give the public a direct and firsthand experience of the house at work, as opposed to what they would otherwise get from reports and commentaries,” he said.

Mung’ata said streaming the proceedings will allow the public to participate in debates by accessing real time deliberations.

The speaker said live broadcast is critical in the assembly’s efforts to inform residents.
