Igwamiti ward MCA Joseph Kabachi has been appointed the Laikipia county assembly majority leader.

The seat fell vacant following the death of Ephraim Wachira.

Wachira, popularly known as Kamakia, collapsed and died during Mashujaa Day celebrations at Nanyuki Stadium on October 20 last year.

Kabachi, who hails from Laikipia West subcounty, got 12 votes during the election at a Naivasha hotel on Monday.

Minority leader Paul Lebeneyo of ODM and Sosian ward MCA Jacob Edong of GNU came to the meeting but were kicked out.

“Why would a member voted in through an opposition party want to participate in Jubilee affairs. It is unacceptable and that is why we flushed them out,” said a member who did not want to be named.

Kabachi’s three opponents, Michael Kinyua of Thingithu, Rose Maitai (nominated) and Wilson Wakahiu (Salama), did not get a single vote.

Some Jubilee members are said to have boycotted the election, despite attending.

There are 20 Jubilee MCAs.

However, some residents of Laikipia East constituency criticised their leaders for not defending the seat.

“This seat belonged to Laikipia East. Our leaders should have fronted one of their own to succeed Kamakia. All Laikipia leadership is now in Laikipia West – the governor, woman representative, senator and the speaker,” resident Mwangi Njogu said.
