WE WANT ANSWERS: Machakos residents at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Machakos yesterday. They want Governor Alfred Mutua arrested.

A group of Machakos residents yesterday stormed the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in the town demanding Governor Alfred Mutua’s immediate arrest.

Mutua was charged with violating procurement procedures when buying 14 cars for county executives.

Led by businessman Dee Kivuva and Chamber of Commerce branch chairman Simon Kitheka, the group questioned the ODPP’s delay in arresting Mutua.

The High Court quashed his application to stop his arrest.

Kivuva said: “We have come to get information because Justice Isaac Lenaola ruled last week that our governor should face the law.”

He said the delay in arresting Mutua is deliberate.

“The constitution gives residents power to seek information of public interest. We feel something is wrong,” Dee said.

Kitheka said the law should not be applied selectively.

“If the governor has a case to answer then we need to see him in court with the other officers who were involved in the case,” he said.

However, the group was turned away as the officer handling the case, Joseph Gikonyo, was not there.

Last week, the High Court dismissed his application seeking to bar the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission from arresting him.

Mutua said he was not directly involved in the procurement process.
