MOVING ON: Laikipia speaker Patrick Mariru and Governor Joshua Irungu arrive in the assembly for the state of the county address on Tuesday.

The Laikipia government has suspended e-procurement, Governor Joshua Irungu said on Tuesday.

In his address to the assembly after the Christmas holiday, he said there have been problems implementing the technology.

Irungu said the suspension will give room for consultation.

He said his administration may not have done much with the “strained allocations” it receives from the Commission on Revenue Allocation.

Irungu said the county has started numerous projects, which have transformed people’s lives.

The projects include the Household Economic Empowerment Programme to reduce poverty.

Irungu said the fight against poverty does not require sophisticated strategies.

He said it requires simple approaches driven by genuine political goodwill.

“As a government, we may construct state-of-the-art roads, modern schools and hospitals, but the people will never appreciate all these while the forces of poverty continue pulling them into the sea of hopelessness,” Irungu said.

He said 25 cooperative societies have received Sh5.5 million through the County Cooperative Revolving Fund. Irungu said next week he will issue cheques worth Sh4 million to 75 groups.

The governor said bursaries will be disbursed soon as the exercise is almost complete.
