Three suspended schoolgirls are admitted at the Nyamira County Hospital after attempting suicide by drinking hydrochloric acid.

The hospital medical superintendent, Cyrus Ayuga, said the girls are out of danger.

The Tabaka Mixed Secondary School in Kisii county students were found at Nyabite market and taken to hospital by boda boda operators.

The operators said they heard them cry from an abandoned alley on Tuesday.

“They are improving. Their condition is good now. Two had taken a larger portion of the acid,” Ayuga told reporters yesterday.

The girls were suspended from school after they were found with a mobile phone, a charger, a sim card and earphones.

Principal Nickson Owino wept uncontrollably as he consoled them at the hospital.

He said the girls were suspended and asked to report tomorrow with their parents.

Suicide notes were recovered from their bags.

In the two lengthy notes, the girls said they do not want to trouble their parents with their problems after being suspended.

They said their “poor” parents could not afford to pay fees arrears for the whole year and the electricity bill before being readmitted.

“I’m surprised they decided to attempt suicide,” Owino said.
