Lecturers and workers at the Jaramogi University of Science and Technology, Bondo, yesterday boycotted work, citing irregular payment of allowances and lack of accountability by management.

Kenya University Staff Union Bondo secretary Mathews Oduol said the university irregularly paid huge allowances to some employees in December.

He said management paid themselves between Sh300,000 and Sh500,000 allowances from the research vote-head.

Those in finance pocketed between Sh40,000 and Sh70,000, while the rest received Sh5,000 each, Oduol said.

He said in 2014, the allowance was 25 per cent of individual salary.

Oduol was addressing a joint gathering of Kusu and Universities Academic Staff Union employees.

But vice chancellor Prof Stephen Agong said the proceeds of the research vote-head was distributed according to the level of participation in research activities and management of research funds.

“Of course, some people had to get more than others. The policy is very clear, those who contributed more to research activities received more,” he said.

Agong said a recently signed CBA has been fully implemented and the tension is politically instigated.

“Some people view me as an outsider and they would wish to have one of their own at the helm, so they create unnecessary tension to create an impression of poor management,” he said.
