LEARN FROM MOSES KURIA: Gatundu South MP’s lawyers Danson Mungatana and Francis Munyororo in court yesterday.

The High Court yesterday increased bond to Sh10 million from Sh5 million for Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria for continued hate speech.

The court said the severe terms should be a lesson to other politicians involved in hate speech or incitement.

Judge Luka Kimaru, sitting in Nairobi, ordered Kuria to deposit a further Sh5 million bond in seven days or go to jail.

He also raised bail from Sh1 million to Sh3 million.

The MP was out on Sh1 million bail after denying incitement and hate speech charges last November 30.

Kuria is accused of urging his constituents to attack politicians opposed to NYS projects on June 26, 2015 at Gatundu Stadium.

The prosecution said it’s improper for a leader to call for the killing of innocent Kenyans .

Kimaru said records at the chief magistrate’s court show Kuria had been warned not to utter the same words but the prosecution demonstrated he had continued to do so.

Last year, the MP lost a bid to bar the media from covering his criminal case.

The magistrate ruled there were no compelling reasons or evidence to prove he had been “tried and convicted by the media.”

Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko had demanded cancellation of the MP’s bond for continued hate speech.

The DPP, through senior assistant Leornard Maingi, said national security and considerations of public safety require the denial of bail.

The prosecution sought to deny the MP bond on grounds there is an increase in hate speech and incitement cases.

The DPP said politicians charged with hate speech have shown no respect for the courts.
