The opposition yesterday made good its threat to punish rebels by kicking Lunga Lunga MP Khatib Mwashetani out of the National Assembly's House Business Committee.

Cord replaced Mwashetani with Mombasa Woman representative Mishi Mboko.

In the changes to the House Business Committee, only Mwashetani’s name was dropped from the 29-member team that sets the National Assembly’s agenda.

The approval of the HBC was the only agenda before the National Assembly as MPs trooped back from their two-month break.

Mwashetani is among Cord legislators from the Coast who have been warming up to Jubilee in the recent past, with their parties threatening to kick them out.

The others are Kilifi North MP Gideon Mung'aro and Kilifi South's Mustafa Iddi, who have already been served with warning letters by ODM for campaigning for Jubilee in the upcoming Malindi by-election.

On January 21, ODM chair John Mbadi wrote to Mung’aro and Iddi to show cause why disciplinary action should not be taken against them for pledging support to Jubilee.

But Mung'aro and Iddi had dared ODM to kick them out of the party, saying the threats will not stop them from campaigning for JAP candidate Phillip Charo.

“I do not see any problem, I was chief whip and after being sacked life has not changed. Let them take the letter to Speaker Justin Muturi,” Mung'aro said.

In 2014, ODM removed Mung’aro as the Cord chief whip for his perceived association with the ruling Jubilee Coalition.

Previously, ODM also kicked out MPs Ken Obura, Dalmas Otieno, Zainab Chidzuga and Samuel Arama from committees.

At the same time, Cord has vowed not to accept what it calls attempts by the Jubilee government to amend the constitution to create an imperial presidency.

Cord also said it will only accept a national Budget that allocates resources to the most deserving and priority areas, not one that puts money “where it is easy for Jubilee to steal it”.

The opposition was speaking after a Cord Parliamentary Group meeting at Wiper House that was attended by ODM, Wiper and Ford Kenya MPs.

Siaya Senator James Orengo, who read the statement, said that proposed changes to the Judicial Service Commission and the Public Audit acts were unconstitutional.

“We will stand firmly against the re-invention of the old order in the name of strengthening the presidency or fighting insecurity.”
