Villagers in Taita Taveta county have refused to bury a man they lynched on Saturday after he allegedly raped and beheaded a nine-year-old girl.

Nashon Mwazighe, 55, was lynched in Choke, Wundanyi, after he allegedly sexually assaulted and murdered the class three student.

“My villagers have not shown any interest in burying the man because of his heinous act,” village elder Teri Mwale told the Star on the phone yesterday.

“They have said they will not bury him.”

Wundanyi police boss Benjamin Muhia said Mwazighe lived alone.

He said the suspect was spotted abducting the nine-year-old girl before locking her inside the house.

“The girl was on her way to a nearby kiosk when she bumped into the attacker. A boy who witnessed the incident informed the villagers, who raided the house but they were too late,” Muhia said.

Mwale said Mwazighe had attempted to rape several women in the village.

“At one time, he had to run away from the village. The villagers were tired of his bad habits,” he said.

Mwale said Mwazighe was not in good terms with his family, either.

“He was a threat to society. He had a chain of women but he was never satisfied with them,” the village elder said.
