The family of an Embu teacher who died in India needs Sh1.6 million to clear the hospital bill.

Siakago Girls Secondary School students, teachers, non-teaching staff, friends and the family of Robert Maina have been raising funds for past one week.

They have raised Sh3.7 million of the Sh5.3 million needed to fly the body home and pay the hospital bill.

Maina died in India while undergoing cancer treatment.

School principal Lucy Muthoni yesterday said they plan to bury Maina on Saturday.

She said they have made a Sh1 million downpayment to Apollo Hospital, and have committed to clear the balance later.

Muthoni said the hospital also gave them a discount of Sh1million.

The body arrived in the country on Saturday.

Muthoni said the school decided to intervene and raise the funds from well-wishers.

She said teachers and students have been selling doughnuts, biscuits, T-shirts and even engaged in a walk to raise the money.

On Saturday a fundraiser raised Sh1.35 million.

The family of Maina also held a funds drive on January 30, and raised 860,000, while friends in Nairobi collected Sh1.5 million.

Mbeere North MP Charles Njagagua urged the government to equip all level 5 hospitals with cancer treatment equipment and medicine.
