<<FOOTBALL>>Salary dispute between coach and club ends in termination of contract
One and a half years of success for Gor Mahia under Scottish tactician Frank Nuttal has come to an end after he revealed he had parted ways with the club
ahead of today’s DStv Super Cup clash
against Bandari in Mombasa.
“The reason for termination of my contract is because the Executive Committee of Gor Mahia club wanted to reduce my salary by 50 per cent whereas
my contract clearly provided for a 10 per cent increase of my salary from 1st January, 2016,”said Nuttal in a statement.
Gor, through club official Ronald Ngala, issued their side of the story.
“Throughout last year we struggled to pay Mr. Nuttall’s salary of Sh700,000 per month. We offered him several 3 bedroomed fully furnished apartments in the Kilimani area at rents between Sh120,000 and Sh150,000 per month, but he declined saying they were substandard,” Ngala revealed.
“As a result he lived at the Nairobi Serena Hotel where the club paid an average Sh600,000 per month. At the end of the season, the Executive Committee delegated the Senior Vice Chairman to renegotiate Nuttal’s emoluments.
The two met and it was proposed to Mr. Nuttall that he should take a 50per cent pay cut and a monthly house allowance of Sh120,000,”added Ngala
According to Ngala Nuttal informed the Senior Vice Chairman that in principle the proposal was acceptable to him because
he wanted to keep his job, but he said he first needed to consult his family and he returned to Scotland.
“From Scotland he sent an email ostensibly asking the club to put the proposal in writing which we
did on 29th December, 2015.
“Nuttal
replied on 31st December, 2015 saying thank you for your recent mail giving me up to 5pm today to accept or decline your pay cut. Owing to the love I have for the club and being aware of the financial constraints facing the club, I considered and can now confirm that you can proceed to prepare the new contract as you have suggested.” revealed Ngala.
The club disclosed
that they prepared a contract along those terms and sent it to Nuttal’s advocate for signing or comments. The lawyer redrafted the contract where Mr. Nuttall now wanted a salary of Sh770,000 a house allowance of Sh250,000, a sturdy 4-wheel drive vehicle and numerous out of pocket allowances among others”.
