Lost AK47: Police carry away Kisumu slain couple yesterday.

A tuk-tuk driver and his wife were shot dead on Wednesday night in Nyalenda slums, Kisumu town.

Elijah Omondi and Jacinta Achieng were killed in their house at midnight.

Assistant Inspector General Joseph Keitany yesterday told the Star on the phone nine bullet cartridges from an AK47 rifle were found at the scene.

Residents said they heard gunshots but did not know their neighbours were being shot.

Nothing was stolen in the house and it was not broken into, Keitany said.

“We suspect the victims had crucial information against their killers,” Keitany said.

This comes barely two days after a police officer based at Kisumu Central police station lost an AK47 rifle assigned to him.

Sources linked the killings to the missing gun.

When called for comment, Kisumu county police boss Nelson Njiri said he was in a meeting.

Kisumu Residents’ Voice Association chairman Audi Ogada said the couple was killed to hide evidence of the missing gun.

“We suspect the man had vital information and his murder was well perpetrated by police,” he said.

Ogada gave the police seven days to arrest the killers and to charge the officer who lost his gun.
